Holy Island Viking Horn Tankards

£45.00

Soldiers mug - tankard  Medium size.

Enjoyed by soldiers and 'Ye olde ancients of yore'... and possibly those marauding Vikings. Just imagine after a hard days looting and pillaging what could be more relaxing then settling down with a mug of foaming ale or pint of mead with your best girl by your side...???  I wonder if any will be found on the Island when the new dig starts

The horn used for the tankards and drinking horns, come from the Ankole cattle, West Africa.  As they have plenty of space to roam the horns grow large and are an ancient source for drinking vessels.  These tankards are moulded from one piece of horn, then a wooden base is applied and the inside is sealed with a food safe resin to water proof.

Cow horn has thermoplastic properties, which means it can be softened and made malleable by heating. It can then be bent, shaped and moulded into various contours to create the wonderful horn products in our range. Un-worked cattle horn has a rough dull surface, however after sanding and polishing the horn takes on a smooth glossy appearance, it is only at this stage that it’s true colours appear. While cattle horn can be nearly any colour, it is generally a light creamy colour, sometimes streaked with white, brown or black patches.

Product care:   only use with cold drinks (preferably foaming ale, mead or whisky).  Wash before use in tepid water and mild washing soap, dry immediately.  Don't leave soaking in water, don't use the microwave ???.  Horn will mark if cut or scratched.  Polish with a light vegetable oil from time to time.  Keep out of direct sunlight

85 x 180 mm ever so roughly, holds a pint ish. Tankards vary in colour and will be different from the ones shown here - every time.
